What Factors Determine How Long An AC Installation Takes?

Whether you’re installing a brand new HVAC system or replacing a broken one you always want to know how much time the AC installation is going to take – and for good reason! Being without air for a period of time, especially in the summer months, can be a huge inconvenience. You also have to schedule around technicians in your home, so we know you want the installation to go as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately, Big Mountain Heating & Air is here to tell you there is no set time for every AC installation. Several factors go into giving homeowners a time estimate, but at least we can tell you what those factors are so you can keep in mind what affects the timetable of an AC installation.

Four Factors That Affect The Speed of AC Installation

There are four main factors that may slow down or speed up your AC installation that you can be aware of when planning your installation.

Home Size

The size of your home is a big factor in the timetable because the difference between a 1,500 square foot home AC system and a 5,000 square foot home installation is huge. Larger homes almost always have multiple units installed, which just takes longer since there is more to install.

AC Type

According to the kind of heating and cooling system you are installing, the time requirements may be longer or shorter. For example, a full HVAC system may take longer than a mini-split system due to the complexity of design and the extent of physical installation requirements.

Installation Type

There are two types of installations that have their own time requirements.

  • Change Out – A change-out installation occurs when your unit is being replaced, but all the other necessary equipment is already set up in your home. This installation can take as little as one day to complete.
  • Full System – If your installation also requires ductwork to be set up and run it will take longer than a simple changeout. Running ductwork is the part of the process that takes the longest to complete. Technicians are more likely to have to rewire the thermostat or run into other problems when replacing an entire system, so this installation could take between three and five days to complete.

 Unit Location

Some AC units have easy access for technicians to reach them quickly and efficiently. Others may be in tricky locations like basements or second stories, which may take a little longer. Condos and apartments with high roofs often cause longer AC installation times to allow the team to move the unit onto the roof.

What Our Customers Have To Say

Good Rebates

This is a review for a complete HVAC system replacement from Big Mountain. I started at the SMUD website looking for the best rebate program and found a list of contractors there. I vetted out companies that had a lower number of completed jobs per the SMUD rebate program data.

Very Professional

Had my A/C go out yesterday, called Big Mountain today and they had a serviceman in my area of Lincoln, he was here within a half hour and fix my unit in a very professional manner, and the cost was reasonable. I was very impressed with the company and the serviceman.

I had a appointment with them between 1-3 and one of their staff members called me and kept me updated when they will arrive which was nice. Steve arrived on time and was really nice for explaining what could the cause be. My ac fan was working but cool air wasn’t coming out.
