How to Improve Indoor Air Quality

September 9, 2021 | Blog

We all know that it’s important to clean our homes, but it’s also important to take steps to clean the air within our homes. You’d be surprised to know how dirty your home air is without taking proper steps. And it’s important to take these steps to protect your health.

Here at Big Mountain Air, we know the importance of good air quality and how to maintain it. Here are steps you can take to improve your indoor air quality.

What is Indoor Air Quality?

Indoor air quality, or IAQ, refers to the overall air quality inside of your home. Many factors can both positively and negatively impact your IAQ.

Some things that can negatively impact your indoor air quality include:

  • Dust
  • Pollen
  • Bacteria
  • Mold
  • Fungi

Having a good IAQ is very important to people who have allergies and asthma. A poor IAQ can lead to heavy sneezing, coughing, or irritated sinuses. If you suspect that you might have poor indoor air quality, don’t worry. Here are a few ways you can improve your indoor air quality.

Change your AC Filter

Air filters keep dust, pollen, and dirt from getting into your home through your HVAC system. While these filters are good at their job, eventually they will need to be replaced.

Routinely check your air filter. If it’s full of dust, then it’s time to be replaced. Not only will this help your indoor air quality, but it will also help your AC system as a full air filter can overstrain your air conditioner.

Check Other Filters Throughout Your Home

Don’t forget the other filters in your home. Changing filters in other parts of your home and in household appliances can also help your IAQ. Be sure to check your vacuum filters, clothes dryer, and kitchen vents.

Clean Your Air Ducts

Air ducts send hot and cold air throughout your home but they can also send dust. Over time, dust can build up in the vents making your air quality worse. Feel free to clean the vents yourself however, it’s best to call a professional to clean the ducts.

Use Vents or Open a Window When Cooking

A lot of indoor pollution can come from gas stoves. Gas stoves release a lot of contaminates and it doesn’t take long for them to spread throughout your home. Even electric burners can produce some contaminants. Make sure you use your kitchen vents or open a window for proper ventilation when cooking.

Make Sure Your Rugs and Carpet are Clean

While rugs are great for making your home more comfortable, they are also good at trapping dust and dirt particles. Make sure to clean your rugs and carpet at least once a week to ensure they stay dirt-free. If you have pets, then you might consider cleaning them even more often.

Keep the Humidity in Your Home in Check

Humid and moist conditions allow mold and mildew to grow in your home. In turn, these molds can trigger allergies and asthma. If you live in a humid climate, you should attempt to control the conditions by buying a few dehumidifiers. Be sure to place them throughout your home for maximum results.

What Our Customers Have To Say

Good Rebates

This is a review for a complete HVAC system replacement from Big Mountain. I started at the SMUD website looking for the best rebate program and found a list of contractors there. I vetted out companies that had a lower number of completed jobs per the SMUD rebate program data.

Very Professional

Had my A/C go out yesterday, called Big Mountain today and they had a serviceman in my area of Lincoln, he was here within a half hour and fix my unit in a very professional manner, and the cost was reasonable. I was very impressed with the company and the serviceman.

I had a appointment with them between 1-3 and one of their staff members called me and kept me updated when they will arrive which was nice. Steve arrived on time and was really nice for explaining what could the cause be. My ac fan was working but cool air wasn’t coming out.
